Why a Blog, Popcorn?

One of the best classes from my early college years was "Contemporary Moral Problems." I had an interest in Philosophy going into it, but the reason (I later realized) why I loved the class was due to the way my prof taught it--through film and TV.

Bart Simpson, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and other pop culture hooligans somehow brought TV generation adolescents closer to the theories of Kant, Locke and ultimately our own ideas of the world.

Here's why: up until that point, we'd accepted much of these shows as representative of normal worlds and typical relationships. Once we brought a philosophical framework of another's creation into the picture, we realized that that which was once just normal could also be seen from radically different perspectives. And it could still make sense.

On this blog, we want further the discussion of movies, their frameworks, and to lay bare the things we accept as "normal" on our television screens, movie screens, and then --in our own lives, our society.

Welcome to Marginally Reel. My name's popcorn and I'll be posting quite a bit, along with my friend BUTTER!!!. Be sure to check out Marginally Reel's sister blog-- http://www.tarantino4worldpeace.blogspot.com/

Look forward to conversing with you!
